Counsellors
use a variety of different methods. Some do a lot of listening;
some ask a lot of questions. Some counsellors will have you drawing,
or writing in a journal, or writing letters to yourself.
Other counsellors will get you to act out different
people in your situation. Some may suggest that you act out a conversation
between the part of you that wants one thing and the part of you
that disagrees. Others will have you make charts that help you to
keep track of the number of times something happens, and what goes
on in connection with that.
The most important thing you need to know is that
every effort will be made to ensure you are comfortable with the
process.
Research has shown that
how you get on with your counsellor is more important than the approach
used. If you can work well together, trust and respect each other,
counselling is more likely to work for you. |
